After two weeks in a row of panicked clients with jammed, missing, or otherwise poorly formed checks, I decided it is time to share the wisdom I learned in college about printers:
In the summer with the high humidity the paper sticks together. In the winter, the heat in old buildings builds up static electricity.

The knowledge of the interweb (http://www.techrepublic.com/article/extend-the-life-of-your-printers-with-these-tips/) indicates that today’s printers shouldn’t require fanning and in-fact that this can cause static electricity. After working in countless college and government offices though where the temperature is never controlled (and the printers are often older than the students)– I have found fanning to be the best deterrent for paper jams.

1) Fan your checks before loading them into the tray.

(If your printer vendor tells you otherwise – listen to them – they are the expert on your model and local weather)!

The second big problem with printers working as a department secretary in college were the mysteries of the missing printer pieces. IT would ask – where did this piece go, what happened to this belt – and no one could answer. If you can, request a dedicated check printer and hide it on your desk or in your office so others cannot push and pull on levers on the valuable check printer.

Then there are emergency checks. Many have also been known to pull a check from the stock box to use. Keep the majority of the stock in the original box and packaging (again humidity and weather are enemies) – pull out a few checks from the top or bottom of the box to use for one-off (emergency) checks.

2) Guard your check printer and stock with your life.

Now despite having put safeguards one and two in place, you have a check batch in GP that will not behave. What to do, where to start?

A. Print an edit list

A missing distribution can prevent a batch from posting.

B. Check the batch status under Batch Recovery or Series Posting.

If your check batch is not where you expect it, it is probably the batch status in a state that you did not want it. Either Batch Recovery or Series Posting should solve the status mystery.

C. Change the batch status.

After step 2 what do you do next? KB 850289 – indicates setting the BCHSTTUS back to 0. KB 852420 indicates other options (HINT: 110 – lets you get back to the REPRINT option!)
